Doctor Who finale, music, and cake

(Some mild spoilers for Doctor Who series 4 finale follow, look away now if you don't want to know anything)

Blimey. German Daleks. German Daleks! Shrieking "Exterminieren!" Now, there were loads of superb moments in the brilliantly bonkers finale, I loved the sheer energy and cheek of it all, mixed in with some surprisingly harsh cruelty (like the ending, and the fantastic moment where Davros explains exactly how the Doctor is pretty much the same as him) - but dude. Come on. German Daleks. I don't care if you love or hate the show, German Daleks are officially the best thing ever. We wound it back about 20 times, unable to believe that it was really happening. We were a bit over excited, slightly drunk, and eating a TARDIS cake. Don't believe me about the cake?? Eat this:

Yeah. No messing about here. Although the copious amounts of blue icing, combined with booze, made us feel a bit ill later. We ate quite a lot of it.

By the way, back when I visited the TARDIS set, I immediately ran around the console pretending to fly it, playing with all the buttons and levers, followed by a slightly worried script editor who kept saying, very politely, "haha, of course a lot of it is really quite fragile, haha, and OH CHRIST WILL YOU BE CAREFUL, er, please, haha..." And I also got to pump that weird pumpy thing that Captain Jack pumped in the finale. Yes. Me and Captain Jack both pumped the same pumpy thing. I pumped it real good, too.

And no, I didn't know what was going to happen in the 2 part finale. Honestly. Before Saturday, everyone kept asking me - so, did you know that was going to happen, do you know what's coming, is there a new Doctor, who is it, go on, you know, don't you, *don't you*??. And every time I said I didn't know, they'd smile, and nudge me, and say yeah, but you *do* know really, don't you? Seriously? And I'd say no again - they only told me what I needed to know, partly for security, partly because they know that I don't like spoilers anyway. And they'd just smile, and nod, and wink, still not believing me. But I didn't know. I promise.

Now. I'm looking for music recommendations again. I've fallen behind with new stuff, so let me know the *very latest* stuff that I should be listening to. I like most genres, from the darkest, hardest drum and bass, to the silliest, most delicate pop fluff. What's new? What's cool? What's essential? No boy/girl bands, no whiney indie Coldplay-style stuff, no quirky Cockney female singer songwriters (way too many of those now). Anything else goes. Lay it on me.

Really going to miss Doctor Who now, and not just because my eldest has finally gotten into it. Not enough clever writing going on for me at the moment - is Bonekickers going to fill the gap til new Torchwood arrives?
PS Why do I have to sign up again everytime I want to leave a comment?

Watcha James!

I, like you, thought the Dr Who season finale was awesome (as our U.S. Couins say).

The evil, twisted reasoning of Davros, (a great homage to the darkness of "Genesis of the Daleks" from the Tom Baker days), the Nazi Daleks (come on, they're the SS anyway), and all the great comedy and pathos.
Brilliant stuff!

New Music, you ask?

Take a gander & a listen at "For Ramona" at http://www.myspace.com/forramona

Bollocks!

"U.S. Couins" are obviously an alternative universe version of the more common and garden earthling "U.S. Cousins"

Just so you'd know...

Regina Spektor; unusual, prolific, imaginative, and brilliant.

The German Daleks were inspired; my friend and I were yelling "Exterminieren!" for hours after we watched it.

I now have Torchwood withdrawal symptoms. Gah. *needs fix*

Catherine Tate killed it in that episode, but Jesus Christ what a shitty thing to do to her character. It was a very cruel and misguided way to close her arc. It rendered her entire growth as a character null and void and that's a fate worse than fate. Left a very sour taste in my mouth, that did.

In terms of music, I would recommend Trace Bundy if you like acoustic music. Also Arcade Fire and MDMT and you know -- the new Coldplay album is actually brilliant.

A fate worse than death, I mean.

James -

That cake ... my stomach flipped just looking at it. If you'd all simply punched each other in the stomach, you'd have enjoyed the same internal discomfort, but with none of the calories.

Here's my prescription for music downloads - though not exactly new stuff. If you can't steal these directly, at least go to YooToob and listen along with the video:

Monster Magnet SPACE LORD
Steve Earle COPPERHEAD ROAD
Shout Out Louds THE COMEBACK
Social Distortion HIGHWAY 101
Misfits WHERE EAGLES DARE
Cracker HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME
Two Ton Boa COMING UP FROM BEHIND
Jimmy Eat World THE AUTHORITY SONG
Jesus & Mary Chain 'TIL IT SHINES
Me First & the Gimme Gimmes NOTHING COMPARES 2 U
Del the Funky Homosapien MISTA DOBALINA
Keith Secola NDN KAR (also INDIAN CAR)
Georgia Satellites BATTLESHIP CHAINS
Kid Rock ONLY GOD KNOWS WHY
Toy Dolls BACK IN 1979
Brad Mehldau ELEGY FOR WM. BURROUGHS & ALLEN GINSBERG
Robert Earl Keen A BORDER TRAGEDY
George Thorogood MADISON BLUES (live version is best)
Mr. Lif THE NOW

Now to ask a favor of you James (or Arnopp or anyone else who's too smart for their own good and regularly posts to this site): Finished Issue 1 of my comic book script today. It's solid. It's sexy. Hoping to have a synopsis for entire series finished and submitted w/ first issue by this time next week. Other than some freelance magazine articles, this is the first real writing I've done (at least the first I've really given a s**t about). I feel like I'm about to have a baby or something. The favor I'm asking is whether you could post a link for any synopses for similar projects, please. I know it's just an abbreviated retelling, but it would be cool to see the real thing just to compare, make sure I'm not wide of the mark.

-gracias amigos-

P.S. - Sheikspear, I'm touched you'd think to call us Yanks your cousins. My buddy in Yorkshire uses a sort of shorthand for identifying me as an American in stories and conversation - referring to me as "one of those chimps who only eats with his fork."

I can't eat in front of him during our visits because he stares at me and smiles like I'm a baby eating dry Cheerios by the handful. "Look! He's trying to *feed* himself!"

the german daleks were pretty genius. what happened to donna was heartbreaking, but the clone dr and rose was a bit wrong. also, bernard cribbins is a *legend*.

musically, i've recently been obsessed with/can't stop listening to: fleet foxes, u.n.p.o.c., james yorkston (who's playing at the roundhouse in august), slow club and the young knives. and the beatles, but i'm sure you've already heard of them...

Justine said...

The German Darleks were one of my many favourite bits!! Some of Jacks lines were outstanding! Donnas ending was a disaster and the Rose and clone Dr bit made me rather unhappy.

New music, listen to Disgracelands (www.myspace.com/kudos6), they share the same musicians as Blue Gillespie, Gareth David-Lloyd's band and they are bloody brilliant. I've started a blog about them here: http://disgracelandsfan.blogspot.com/

Better still come and see them in Cardiff on the 17th August in Ten Feet Tall. Should be an excellent night.

James, I saw that cake in Sainsbury's the other day and thought how kids must love it. Or indeed Grown Up Kids.

I recommend Seth Lakeman's new album.

Oh those cakes are the best!!! In case you found there wasn't quite enough sugary bits contained within it's tasty blueness however, try covering it in millions of those little silver bally cake decorations too! Yum! Perfection!

Aside from that sooper dooper episode of vastly exciting proportions! Loved it!

Within Temptation are quite good :)

Jim, if you're looking for treatments for comic series, there's always Alan Moore's legendary Twilight of the Superheroes. I wouldn't recommend writing a treatment quite like this, but it's certainly worth a look.

If I dig out any more, I'll let you know.

Lee said...

Jim - I've also got the original series proposal for Warren Ellis' Planetary, if that will help.

Yes, this episode had some really brill moments, but when it ended I was a bit miffed.

Really lame to say Rose needs to go back to the alternate reality, but Micky does not. What a load of crap.

It's just sad, when the realities of casting, actors moving on, etc impacts a show, especially a SciFi show in this way.

There are so many better possible outcomes that could satify reality without being so obvious.

I know I could do better. How about having a contest to rewrite the last 10 minutes of this episode, just for our own amusement.

Dude, as if we needed photographic proof that there was a blue Who (Dr., not The) cake you ate copious amounts of. At least, I didn't need any. That's totally 'you'.

Please tell J I'm going to the Royal Opera House tonight to see The Rake's Progress. It's should be quite something!

Oooh The Rake's Progress is fantastic Amanda, one of my absolute favourites! I hope you love it! J x

Last night, I caught the briefest glimpse on MTV2 of a band called Cage The Elephant, which gets my vote for most amusing band name, but the song didn't seem too bad n'eiver. I am off to iTunes to investigate.

Can't contribute anything about music (or gold) but CAN tell you that M&S are doing a yummy-looking chocolate dalek cake at the moment if anyone's interested...

Sharon said...

The finale left me going "ooh!" then "Eek" then "Oh no!" then "Hmm..."

but overall, i'd say it was good!

I love the cake, and the German Daleks were the highlight of the show (me and my friend are still talking about them!)

Music-wise, I'm a bit random... but I'd give a kick up to Pendulum :)

faldor said...

I thought the finale was rubbish i'm afraid, the cop out regeneration was what I expecting,

it was just lots of running around without much plot, Rose and The Doctor hardly got to have a decent chat and then he dumps her again with a genocidal maniac!

shame Davros didnt actually get anything to do and the Daleks now seem cheaper than ever.

heyho, It was probably one of the strongest seasons over all, I hope in 2009 they put effort into stronger episodes through out the run with this new cult of the finale we seem to have developed.

oh and Cribbins for companion!

Danny Stack said...

After further investigation, I can tell you that Cage the Elephant are a 'thunderous' (NME) 5 piece rock 'n'roll band. My best description: Beck meets Stone Rones. And oh yes, Fleet Foxes, check 'em out for something quite nice but a bit different (great vid for their new single).

"is Bonekickers going to fill the gap til new Torchwood arrives?" asked dim, at the top.

We have our answer now, don't we?

No. No, it won't.

Catherine said...

Loved Doctor Who! Sigh. Have picked up series 2 to fill the void.

Music - I recommend pretty much anything played by Rob da Bank or Late Junction! Hop over to the BBC listen again and find them under 'experimental'. Love it! Esp the Duke Dumont remix of Two Doors Down.

Danothebaldyheid said...

I enjoyed the episode, but am prepared to second those who thought Donna got a raw deal. It seems a shame when I had finally learned to love Catherine Tate (talking about cheeky cockney lasses).

As far as music is concerned:

The strange, beautiful but intoxicating sounds of the Books are particular favourites just now.

White Denim are joyously eccentric Southern Rock with those punky, jerky rhythms that excite me somewhere inside.

The latest Four Tet - Ringer is as masterfully constructed as could be expected from the Mozart of electronic music.

Lite are a fascinating, instrumental math-rock group with lovely melodies and those disorienting rhythms again. The first album's the one to listen to (try Myspace).

I hope something there captures your ear!

All those years of German FINALLY paid off on the Season finale of Doctor Who!!! Although I couldn't understand everything Martha and the woman were saying to each other (hey it HAS been 10 years)...when I heard those daleks, I about FLIPPED!

At first I was like...did I really hear that right?! (The speakers on my laptop suck...not that I would download the episode before I could legally watch it in the US) And then "EXTERMINIEREN!"

It was good for me...

Glad to see I wasn't the only one!

That cake looked amazing. The picture on the top was very well done. Must stop dribbling...

Music wise... hmmm. I've known you for about 7 minutes (not including reading 'Breadcrumbs' a couple of days ago) so I'll run a few of my favourite bands past you - The Noisettes, Muse, Disturbed, Rilo Kiley, Nick Cave. Although I do like Coldplay's new album! :)
